OpenOffice.org

OpenOffice.org  (Free)

If you are on the lookout for a viable alternative to Microsoft Office, you would do well to consider OpenOffice.org. This open-source product is an office productivity suite that can be installed on a number of different platforms. The product includes familiar desktop applications like a top class word processor, a presentation manager, a spreadsheet, and a drawing application. The user interface of OpenOffice, along with its extensive feature set, make it broadly similar to MS Office and other such products. OpenOffice.org is also effective in dealing with a raft of file formats; these include all those generated by Microsoft Office. OpenOffice.org offers support for a whopping 27 languages, with even more languages constantly being added to the product.

OpenOffice.org can be installed on the following platforms: Solaris, Windows, and Linux (incl. PPC Linux). The program, which is written in C++, has a documented API, which is licensed through the SISSL, and LGPL protocols, which are both open-source. OpenOffice.org is deliberately designed to allow any developer with the necessary knowledge to modify it.

What’s new in version 3.4.1: Support introduced for British English, Finnish, and Khmer languages; fixed cleanup of extensions; automatic check for updates now enabled as default.
